Biology: Key Stage 4 GCSE

Most pupils follow the WJEC GCSE course for Separate award or Additional award Science.

The list of topics taught and their sub-sections are listed below. The format of this table is used by the pupils on their personal progress-monitoring sheet. It can be used by teachers to keep a record of the work covered by each class.

Biology 1

Biology 2

Biology 3

Details of the knowledge and understanding taught can be seen in the syllabus. The courses also include practical investigations for coursework.

Key Stage 5: AS and A Level Courses

The Department teaches the OCR AS and A Level course. The course consists of four modules plus two course-work investigations.

Course Content and Nature of the Work

Students are encouraged to use their initiative and to take responsibility for their progress. They will need to buy the AS and A level work books which contain the basic work for each unit, but they are also expected to extend their reading on each topic.  The course is demanding, stimulating and requires a high level of commitment in terms of both time and effort. Work is of an investigative nature and so students must be prepared to work and think independently.

Internal Assessment

Students are assessed by a number of methods including structured questions and essays, practical investigations and end of topic tests.

Final Assessment

Written examinations consist of short and long structured questions and those requiring more extended answers.

Examinations take place in January and June. All Units can be re-sat with the best attempt counted toward the final award.
