What a fantastic effort from some of our staff and governors today, to celebrate National Tree week in planting around 200 tree saplings to expand our forest school provision. Planting trees and building our educational future, we're going for gold for the Green Trees Award from the Woodland Trust.   Special thanks to Mrs Gillard for ordering the trees and organising the activity. Also, to the young volunteers who also helped.

Here are a few photos of Brecon high school pupils who travelled to Newtown on Saturday 18/11 to compete. It was a real cross country weather day, the rain was relentless at times, windy and the course was hard going with the mud. Some good individual results from all three girls. Ruby came away with a bronze medal for East Wales U17 girls. Pippa also came away with a bronze medal for East Wales U15 girls. Beth Symons U13 girls were just beat into 04th place.

Thursday was arguably the wettest and coldest day of the winter so far on which BHS hosted the final round of the schools X-Country league.  The stalwart athletes from BHS coped well with the conditions and came away with no less than 12 medals! Rosie won 1st year 7 winning all four fixtures in the year 7 age group, Tes Scanlon came 3rd with Tamzin and Beth taking 2nd and 3rd place over all in the junior girls years 8/9.  The junior girls tied for 1st team with Christ college with both schools having won junior team titles in two fixture each. Well done indeed to all the juniors, Ellie, Evie CP, Jessica, Seren, Tes, Rosie, Evelyn, Beth, Maria, Tamzin, Esme and Chloe. Robin Irwin won 2nd place overall for the junior boys which is a brilliant achievement in this very competitive age group, he was backed up by teammate Finn who improved his final finish position with a strong run in difficult conditions, year 7s Declan and Harry made their debuts in this home fixture both running well mid field.  In the senior girls age group Ruby strolled into 1st place for the 4th time carving her way through the muddier parts of the course with ease, with Pippa taking 3rd place overall the pairs vast race experience was evident and a masterclass in pacing. Despite illness and missing this fixture Ifan Davies secured 3rd senior boy overall and picked up a medal having totted up enough race points in the first 3 fixtures. On this showing a good number of BHS athletes will be qualifying for the Powys team in January at the All Powys X-Country championship to be held in early January. Thanks must go parents who have turned out to all 4 fixtures to support their sons and daughters as well as helping me with some of the race admin handing out finishing discs and assisting with the athlete warm up routines.

Brecon High School Governing Body   We are currently looking for a new Community Governor to join our Governing Body.   We would be delighted to hear from anyone who –   Is interested in children’s education and the performance of the school. Is community spirited and would like to represent the community. Has some time to spare and the energy for the role. Can work well with others. Many congratulations to one of our A level Pupils Finn Channing Davies from Brecon High School, who not only achieved top grades in his Product Design A2 level this year, but has also become a prize winning student at the 2023 WJEC Innovation Awards. Finn's brand of 'Crimped Climbing' which includes a portable fitness aid to strengthen finger grip for climbers, accompanied by a carry bag, instruction leaflet and other merchandise has been recognised as a winner from extremely strong competition from across Wales. The WJEC exam board when releasing details of the winners, commented on the difficulty in selecting the winners given the high quality of the projects displayed for judging.    Finn will now receive his award at a presentation at the Senedd in December later this year.  His Teacher from Brecon High School, Mrs Divina Gillard stated that " The dedication, innovation and commitment shown by Finn throughout his time as an A level Student, has been outstanding and the receipt of this award is hopefully the first of many for him as he goes on to study design in university.  As his Teacher, I am extremely proud of his achievements which are thoroughly well deserved. Wednesday night saw a trip over the hills to Maesyderwen High school. Despite the deteriorating weather the girls arrived in fine spirits and soon got playing. The other team put up great resistance and fought hard throughout the match, but couldn’t prevent goals being scored. The Brecon girls played out of position to make the game more balanced and this acted as good experience for all players to see the game from a different perspective. It also highlighted the versatility of the Brecon players ,as most players were highly successful in any role. Particular mention goes to our new and developing Goal keeper Lauren Davies. Huge thanks to Polly Evans & Celyn Owen for stepping in at short notice, due to players unable to attend. (And thanks to Celyn's Dad for bringing her gumshield and shin pads as we were getting on the bus - Legend!) Final score was 10 - 0. The other mention goes to the fantastic sixth form coach, Carys McDonough and umpire Holly Rutherford - excellent role models. Huge thanks to all for their great sportsmanship. Daniel PittBritish Youth Cruiser Weight Boxing Champion Daniel competed at the British Boxing Championships in Scotland - June 2023 Having travelled up to Scotland for a weekend of boxing, Daniel boxed his way right through to the final.. What an achievement! Well done from all at Brecon High School.

Congratulations to Pippa and Beth Symonds who competed at the revived Welsh Junior ( u11/13/15) league in Cardiff this weekend.Pippa posted a new PB in the 800m of 2.38 shaving 3 seconds off her 800m time set last weekend in Aberdare.Beth had a good day out with new P.bs in the 100m (14.6) & long jump (3.61m);  she continued her consistent javelin throwing up against 15 other u13girls with a 12.32m throw to secure 5th place.Bhs students are Looking forward to this Thursday's Powys school track and field championship in Newtown which is a qualifier for the Powys team who will be competing at the Welsh school championship in Cardiff on July 24th

Phoebe Covington and her team finished runners up in Welsh hockey finals play off. Ellis Beavan won bronze at the inter-regional judo competition in Kidderminster.He was kind enough to show me his 3/4th place fight on video this morning against a much taller opponent. After a real tough tussle Ellis turned him onto his back in the grapple after a brilliant inward sweep to get him to the ground thus winning by scoring a one-point Ippon.Beth Symonds won silver at the same competition adding to her impressive tally of medals across three different sports.Edward Jones won a team u13 bronze medal at a regional ruby competition on Sunday.

Well done to year 7 Beth Symonds who took her place in the East Wales Team at the British XC challenge championships in Loughborough on Saturday. This is a National event and a big step up for Beth who had to dig deep in the mud and cold.  She battled her way over a very tough 3km course against 330 of the UKs best U13 runners.A really gutsy run, well done.
